These pictures are the first images I made with this technique and the beginnings of my thinking about mark making and photography and nature. They were all about looking at something very intensely. My own personal Cabinet of Wonder. With these first images my intent was to show that by manipulating the film grain via bleaches and multiple development baths, with brushes and toners I can achieve a type of mark that is unique in the history of art. Simone Weil once said that, "attention is a form of prayer" and I think I would have to agree. It is a type of conversation with God yet it is a conversation that has little to do with organized religion. I believe it has more to do with unearthing something so obvious (to us as humans) yet it’s something which we may have long ago forgotten but still remains deeply buried in our psyches. Maybe what this all boils down to, what I am really making when I photograph these objects, are documents of and to the simple idea of wonder. Much like our modern day physicists, in my own feeble way, I guess I'm just looking around to see if God ever leaves any footprints..
